During my training as a carver I often wondered what the carvings would look like if you could see right through them from behind the piece. This was more to do with the poupou, those carved ancestors placed around the walls within the wharenui - our traditional meeting houses.
And so my passion for glass art was born from that thought.
This large hei tiki was the very first tiki carved in native wood that I would eventually cast into glass. It's a many step process from wood to rubber master mould, to wax to plaster silica, to glass!
During the wax process I will change the design so that each piece is unique.
